Frequently Asked Questions
No, cheap gun safes almost always a waste of your hard-earned money. Low-priced gun safes might seem like a bargain, but they cut corners on security—thin steel, weak locks, and offer little to no fire or burglary resistance. They engage in deceptive marketing, claiming to be fireproof, burglarproof, or floodproof (there is no such thing). A determined thief (or even a curious teenager) could break into a cheap in minutes. If you’re serious about protecting your firearms, it’s worth investing in a quality American-made safe from a trusted brand like Liberty, Brown, or AMSEC. Independent third party testing highlights gun safe quality, but testing is optional. Cheap safe manufacturers don’t test their safes because they will fail. The marks of a quality safe are the UL and ETL labels for fire protection and burglary protection, they can be found on the inside door of the safe. Any gun safe manufacturer claiming fire or burglary protection without the independent scientific lab testing is not being honest.
If you want a safe that’ll actually stand up to a break-in attempt, go with Liberty. Liberty Safes, made in the USA, are known for their robust unibody construction, thick steel, up to 2.5 hours of ETL certified fire protection, and have high-quality UL rated locks. The safes are highly rated for long-term performance. Cannon safes use thin steel, offer less fire protection, and have low-quality solenoid locks. Cannon safes are a lower price than Liberty Safes because they are imported from China and Mexico, built for cheap shipping rates, are made from inferior materials, and lack UL and ETL fire and burglary certifications. Many purchasers have concerns about the security and lock reliability upon receiving their Cannon safe. Cannon is the same manufacturer as Snap-On safes, whos faulty biometric locks caused safes to open without a key or a combination, resulting in a massive nationwide recall.
Yes, for maximum performance a gun safe should be bolted to the floor. After all, a thief can’t steal what they can’t move! Bolting to the floor can also prevent dangerous safe tip-over injuries that can occur when a safe’s door is opened. Bolting your safe adds an extra layer of security and safety, ensuring the safe remains stationary during attempted thefts and while the heavy door is open. Professional locksmiths, such as “A” Locksmith Naples, offer safe installation services that include secure bolting to the floor.
The three biggest threats to your gun safe are fire, water, and burglary attacks, so we recommend you put your gun safes in areas of the home away from those threats. Home fires almost always start in the garage or the kitchen making them unsuitable locations. Do not put your gun safe in areas prone to moisture such as garages, kitchens, bathrooms, and basements as humidity can damage firearms. High traffic areas of your home, locations easily visible like garages, facing a glass door or a window in the front of your home should be avoided. And the winner for the absolute worst place to put a safe is in the garage!
The best place for a gun safe is in a closet, shielded from the view of potential burglars, away from fire hazards, and separate from humid areas of the home. The vast majority of safe owners choose to put their safe in the primary bedroom’s closet for convenience, privacy, and low risk of fire hazards. Alternative places include in an office, guest bedroom closet, or concealed behind custom cabinetry.
Liberty safes are tough to crack—they’re built to withstand common break-in methods like prying, drilling, and brute force attacks. Liberty safes are torture-tested by independent labs (UL and ETL) for burglary attack resistance. However, it’s important to note that with sufficient time, tools, and specialized knowledge, any safe can be breached. Skilled locksmiths open safes for customers who lose their combinations every day. The goal is to make things as difficult as possible for thieves and that is where Liberty safes shine!
Bigger than you think. Most homeowners regret not getting a larger safe. A good rule of thumb? Plan for twice as much space as you currently need. Why? Because safes fill up fast—firearms, ammo, important documents, jewelry, family photos, even cash. It’s better to buy big now than to need another safe later!
For the highest level of gun safety, it is recommended to keep ammunition and guns separate, but it is really a personal choice. Most people keep it all together in one safe. If you have the space for two safes, consider getting a separate ammo safe to keep everything organized and to maximize your secure storage space.
The garage is the worst place to put your safe, but if you don’t have a choice a dehumidifier will be a necessary upgrade to prevent moisture damage. Garages are easy targets for thieves, are often the start of home fires, can have high humidity, and they tend to have huge temperature fluctuations. If possible, try to keep your gun safe inside the home where conditions are more stable.
Yes! If you forget your combination, your lock fails, or your safe won’t open, a professional safe locksmith (like our team at “A” Locksmith Naples) can help. We use non-destructive techniques whenever possible to get your safe open without damaging it. If needed, we can repair, reprogram, or upgrade the lock too.
Absolutely not, we’ve sold gun safes to thousands of people who don’t even own guns. They prefer the height, the spaciousness, the style, and security a large gun safe can offer. The biggest benefit is that a tall safe means you won’t have to bend or stoop to access your items. You don’t have to have gun racks or pistol holders either, our safe specialists regularly transform the interiors of gun safes to accommodate all-purpose shelving, jewelry drawers, and even filing cabinets to maximize the functionality of the space. One client purchased a large Liberty Presidential gun safe and had it equipped with shelving to accommodate her collection of designer handbags!
Generally, 1,000 lbs or more is tough for thieves to move, but we still recommend bolting it down no matter what. We move 1,000 lbs with ease every day. A team of burglars with the right tools can move even a heavy safe if it’s not secured. Bolting it down ensures that it stays put, no matter how strong or determined the burglars are.
Sure, but be careful! Oftentimes purchasing a safe on Amazon (or eBay, Costco, Bass Pro, Wal-Mart and other big-box stores) leads to instant regret. Safes sold online are poorly made and are delivered “curbside” meaning you get to pay a different company to move the safe from the curb into your home, or risk injury and damage to your floors, doors, and walls moving it yourself. Big-box stores and online retailers sell cheap, imported safes that are designed for shipping convenience, not for protection. The lowest quality safes ship flat and require assembly. Because big-box stores and Amazon have to cover high shipping costs, manufacturers cut corners on materials, quality locks, and fire protection. Buying direct from a certified dealer, like “A” Locksmith in Naples, ensures you’re getting a quality safe that will last a lifetime and will be professionally delivered an installed for maximum convenience and protection.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued many warnings resulting in recalls concerning poorly made gun safes because they are unreasonably dangerous. The recent recalls involve carelessly made safe locks which regularly malfunction, enabling unauthorized users, including children, to access the contents without proper authorization. This known defect has led to death and injury, including where a 5-year-old child accidentally shot himself and a 12-year old child died in separate incidents.
January 2025 Stack-On Safe Recall Expected – Made in China and Mexico 200,000 gun safes deemed unreasonably unsafe by CPSC. Sold at Wal-Mart, Amazon, Academy Sports, Sam’s Club, AAFES, Cabela’s, Bas Pro Shops, Dicks Sporting Goods, and eBay under various brand names and ranged from $49 to $1,700. This comes after a 2019 recall for their safes.
June 2024 Sports Afield Gun Safes Recall – Made in China 133,000 safes sold at Costco between $75 and $600
February 2024 Awesafe Recall – Made in China, 60,000 defective safes sold on Amazon and at Wal-Mart for $130
February 2024 MouTec Safe Recall – Made in China, 2,200 defective safes sold on Amazon for $170 to $400. A 6-year old boy opened a locked safe.
February 2024 Bulldog Firearm Safes Recall – Made in China, 24,130 defective safes sold at Bass Pro and Wal-Mart for $190-220.
October 2023 Fortress, Cabela’s, Gettysburg, and Legend Range & Field Recalled – Made in China, 61,000 gun safes sold under various brand names. One known child death of a boy who obtained a gun from one of these safes. Sold at Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s, Scheel’s, Sportsman’s Guide, Optics Planet, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Gander, Rural King, Lowe’s and other stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com and Ebay.com for between $44 and $290.
American manufacturers such as AMSEC, Liberty Safe, and Brown Safe make the best gun safes. If you’re looking for top-tier security stick with an American-made brand that uses thick steel and is UL or ETL certified for burglary and fire protection.
If you live in an area that is within a few minutes of a fire station and has fire hydrants nearby a 30-minute or 60-minute UL or ETL fire rating at 1,200°F or more should be sufficient. Homes in rural areas, where the fire department may take some time to respond, or in areas with regular wildfires will need to be equipped with a safe that exceeds a 90-minute fire rating. AMSEC’s BFX series gun safes are ETL certified for 120 minutes at 1,200°F while Liberty Safe’s Presidential lineup is certified for 2.5 hours, these have both survived intense wildfires nationwide. Brown Safes have customizable fire ratings depending on your unique needs.
